Minister of State Power welcomes recognition of Irish Offshore Research at international conference

.

Dublin, 5 August 2008

The success of Ireland’s seabed mapping programme is being highlighted at a major international conference in Oslo this week. The mapping programme, INFOMAR, is one of the most comprehensive of its type and is currently surveying coastal areas which are important for establishing renewable energy projects as well as to ensure shipping lanes are safely charted. It is funded from the National Development Plan and managed jointly by the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and the Marine Institute.

Minister Seán Power T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, has responsibility for INFOMAR and welcomed the recognition of its success. “I recently visited the team on the Marine Institute research vessel, the Celtic Explorer and was delighted to see the high quality results being produced. The results of the project support a wide range of national objectives, across a number of areas including fisheries, petroleum exploration, environmental protection and heritage. I am delighted, but not surprised, that their work is being showcased internationally”.

The conference, the International Geological Congress, is the principal world gathering of geoscientists which happens once every four years and is attended by over 6,000 specialists from 120 countries.

A feature of this conference will be the launch of the One Geology initiative, which GSI is actively participating in. One Geology is a global initiative by national geological surveys to make worldwide geological information, in the form of maps, easily accessible over the web and already 80 nations are involved. These maps are important in natural resource development, natural hazard management, the protection of groundwater and landscapes, and for educational purposes.

At the conference GSI will also be reporting on other recent developments, including the evolution of the GSI web-enabled information management system, its landslide database and the economic impact of the geoscience sector in Ireland.

Fáilte ón Aire Stáit de Paor roimh Aitheantas do Thaighde na hÉireann Amuigh ón gCósta ag Comhthionól Idirnáisiúnta

Baile Átha Cliath, 5ú Lúnasa 2008

Tá béim á leagadh ar rath an chláir um ghrinneall na mara a léarscáiliú ag mór-chomhthionól idirnáisiúnta in Oslo i rith na seachtaine seo. Tá an clár léarscáiliú INFOMAR ar cheann des na cláir is cuimsithí dá leithéid agus faoi láthair tá suirbhéireacht á imirt ar cheantair chósta ar thábhachtach iad chun tionscadail fhuinnimh inathnuaite a bhunú agus chun cinntiú de go bhfuil bealaí loingseoireachta arna rianú ar chairt d’fhonn sláine. Tá an clár á mhaoiniú ag an bPlean Forbartha Náisiúnta agus is iad Suirbhéireacht Gheolaíochta Éireann (SGÉ) agus Foras na Mara atá á chomh-riaradh.

Luíonn cúram INFOMAR ar an Aire Seán de Paor, Aire Stáit ag an Roinn Cumarsáide, Fuinnimh agus Acmhainní Nádúrtha agus chuir seisean fáilte roimh an aitheantas seo dá rathúlacht: “Le déanaí thug mé cuairt ar fhoireann Bád Taighde Fhoras na Mara, the Celtic Explorer, agus ba chúis áthais dom caighdeán ard na dtorthaí atá á saothrú acu. Is taca na torthaí do bhaint amach an-chuid cuspóirí náisiúnta in an-chuid earnálacha, iascaigh, taiscéalaíocht peitriliam, caomhnú comhshaoil agus oidhreacht ina measc. Is cúis áthais agus ní haon ionadh dom é go bhfuil iomrá idirnáisiúnta á thabhairt dá gcuid oibre.”

Is í an Chomhdháil Gheolaíochta Idirnáisiúnta an príomh-chomhthionól domhanda de gheolaithe a thagann le chéile gach ceithre bhliain agus sa bhreis ar 6000 saineolaithe as 120 tír páirteach ann.

Ball tábhachtach den chomhthionól áirithe seo ná seoladh an tionscnaimh Aon-Gheolaíocht ina bhfuil páirt ghníomhach á ghlacadh ag SGÉ. Tionscnamh domhanda de chuid na suirbhéireachtaí geolaíochta náisiúnta í Aon-Gheolaíocht chun eolas geolaíochta domhanda i bhfoirm léarscáileanna a chur ar fáil go hinrochtana thar an idirlíon agus cheana féin tá 80 náisiún páirteach ann. Bíonn tábhacht leis na léarscáileanna seo um fhorbairt acmhainne nádúrtha, i mbainistíocht guaiseacha nádúrtha, um chaomhnú screamhuisce agus tírdhreach agus i gcúrsaí oideachais.

Ar an gcomhthionól beidh SGÉ ag tabhairt tuairisce ar imeachtaí eile le déanaí, eascairt an chórais bainistíochta eolais ag SGÉ agus é cumasaithe don idirlíon, an bunachar sonraí aici um sciorrtha talún agus tionchar eacnamaíoch na hearnála geo-eolaíochta in Éirinn
