Minister Browne to Meet Fishing Industry Representatives Ahead of December European Council Meeting

 

Dublin, 11th December 2006

Marine Minister John Browne T.D., today spoke ahead of a meeting of the Sea Fisheries Liaison Group scheduled for the Department’s offices in Dublin tomorrow. This is the first meeting to take place between the Minister and the Liaison Group, where the new Federation of Irish Fishermen are represented under the Chairmanship of Mr. Lorcán Ó Cinnéide.

“The Sea Fisheries Liasion Group (SFLG) was formed to provide a mechanism where the industry could engage with officials from the Department in an open forum. Meetings such as these are particularly important as we approach the critical December Fisheries council where so many crucial decisions on fishing opportunities for 2007,” said Minister Browne.

“At the meeting tomorrow I will be seeking to learn from the industry what their priorities are for 2007. As always during our negotiations we will be seeking to secure for Irish fishermen the maximum possible quantity and range of fishing possibilities available in 2007, taking into account the need to provide for long term sustainability of fish stocks and having regard for the recent scientific advice as set out in the Marine Institute’s recently published Stock Book for 2007” continued the Minister.
