Dempsey Thanks Outgoing Chair and Confirms New ComReg Chair

Vietnam, 1st December 2006

Noel Dempsey T.D., the Minister for Communications, Marine & Natural Resources, today expressed his thanks to Isolde Goggin, chairperson of the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) who has decided not to seek a renewal of her contract as a ComReg Commissioner.

“I would like to thank Isolde for her unstinting commitment during her period as Commissioner and particularly her term as Chairperson. In recent years we have seen rapid changes in the communications field and Isolde Goggin brought great skill and expertise to tackling issues of choice, price and quality of telecommunications services for consumers. She has distinguished herself as a fine public servant and I wish her continued success in the future,” said Minister Dempsey.

Minister Dempsey also confirmed that he has appointed Mike Byrne to the chair of the Commission with effect from 1 December 2006 for a period of one year.

“Mike Byrne now comes into the position of Chair of ComReg, having previously led ComReg on consumer affairs and in the promotion of the interests of users. Like his predecessor he will face many challenges in this fast-moving and dynamic sector. I wish him every success in the year ahead," the Minister said.
