Noel Dempsey T.D., Minister for
Communications, Marine and Natural Resources today announced
the appointment of Mr. Mike Byrne as the third Commissioner
of the Commission for Communications
Regulation, for a four year period with effect from 1 December
2004.
Mr. Byrne is currently Director of Market
Operations at the Commission for Communications Regulation
(ComReg), where he had responsibility for a number of key
regulatory initiatives including local area fixed wireless
access, mobile number portability and single billing wholesale
line rental projects. Mr. Byrne joined
ComReg in January 2002, as Director of Market
Framework.
Prior to joining ComReg, Mr. Byrne was a
Director of Vision Consulting, where he managed major
telecommunications and financial services projects for 5
years. He is a former officer in the Defence
Forces, where he held a key role in the development of
strategic technology systems for the Defence Forces.
Aged 42, Mr. Byrne holds an MSc from Trinity
College, Dublin, and a BSc from UCG. He has also completed
executive education courses at UCC and Stanford University,
USA.
The other Commissioners are John Doherty,
the current chairperson of the Commission, and Isolde Goggin,
who will replace John Doherty as chairperson with effect from 1
December 2004.
The Minister said that he looks forward to
working with the ComReg team in continuing to develop the
communications sector.
