Recent incidents involving loss of life and serious injury
together with evidence of unsafe work practices by unqualified
and unscrupulous tradespersons particularly in the area of
domestic gas installations has highlighted the need to
strengthen legislation to ensure public safety.
With this in mind the Minister for Communications, Marine
and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey T.D. today published for
public consultation his proposals for a Natural Gas Safety
Bill.
The Minister proposes to give the Commission for Energy
Regulation (CER) responsibility for safety in the natural gas
industry and to give the CER statutory power to regulate and
promote safety within the industry. The
proposals are available on the Departments Website (http://www.dcmnr.gov.ie/display.asp/pg=1748)
as is the CERs Vision for the Proposed Safety Framework for the
Natural Gas Market in Ireland which CER is also publishing
today for consultation. The Minister is keen
to work with the industry and the public on this issue and now
invites comments on his proposals.
