Marine Minister Gallagher Urges Both Sides to Resolve Ferry Dispute

Dublin, Thursday, 2 December 2004

Marine Minister Pat the Cope Gallagher, T.D., has said he is very concerned about the possibility of further escalation in the industrial dispute at Irish Ferries.

The Minister said, Any further disruption will have serious effects for trade in and out of Ireland.  Such a scenario would have a hugely damaging impact, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

The Minister has spoken to both sides involved in the dispute and urged them to immediately engage in dialogue with a view to averting any further disruption in services.

He added, I have asked the parties involved to reflect carefully on the seriousness of the situation and to consider the grave consequences involved.
