Interim Report Into Inver Bay Fish Kill

Dublin, Wednesday, 23 July 2003

The Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources has received an interim report into the fish kill in Inver Bay, Co Donegal, from the Marine Institute.

The report, prepared by marine and veterinary scientists, says it does not have sufficient evidence at this point to establish what caused the deaths of thousands of farmed fish.

The report says further tests and studies, including detailed chemical analysis, will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident. The Marine Institute will consult also with an international expert about similar fish kills abroad.

Losses amount to some 400,000 fish. Three fish farms, Ocean Farm, Eany Fish Farm and Creevin Fish Farm were affected.

Department officials are currently studying the report and will be liasing closely with the Marine Institute in their ongoing investigation.
