New safety guidelines issued
for Dinghy Sailing, Motorboating and Sport Diving
Dublin, Wednesday, 26 February
2003
Minister
for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr. Dermot
Ahern, T.D., urged those involved in water-based leisure
activities to exercise the utmost caution when participating in
their favoured pastimes. The Minister made his
remarks at the official opening of the Irish Marine Federations
Boat Show 2003 at the RDS in Dublin.
Figures show that over half of the adult population engages in
at least one water-based activity, said the
Minister.
It is vital that people involved in these pursuits
put their own safety first, that they use the correct equipment
and follow all relevant guidelines. Our water-based leisure
facilities are second to none and our coastline offers a myriad
of opportunities for a variety of leisure activities. As a keen water-sports
enthusiast myself I would encourage people to use our wonderful
natural amenities but to do so with safety in mind safety
first, safety always.
The primary
theme of this years Boat Show is Getting
Started. An
important element of getting started is the emphasis on safety
and the Minister took the opportunity to launch three new
safety Sea Safety Guidelines produced by the Marine Safety
Working Group. The
guidelines focus on Dinghy Sailing, Motorboating and
Sport Diving and are comprehensive guides which aim to
ensure that water users are prepared before they set out.
The new
guidelines, along with several other safety leaflets are
available from the Department of Communications, Marine and
Natural Resources or by dialling Freephone 1850 392
392.
