Fahey Announces over €1 M. for Aquaculture Projects

Tuesday, 23 April 2002

Mr. Frank Fahey, T.D., Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources has announced a second tranche of grants to successful applicants under the Border Midland and Western Region Aquaculture Measure of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2000-2006.

The Minister stated that the overall investment support package of €31.74 million being made available under the NDP “is more than double that available under the last programme and emphasises the major importance which I and my Government colleagues attach to the sustainable development of Irish aquaculture.”

“The Government cannot have signalled more clearly the important role which it sees Aquaculture continuing to play into the third millennium as part of the fabric of our coastal, rural and peripheral communities” declared the Minister. “The Irish aquaculture model is a powerful catalyst for rural and coastal renewal and can, I believe, validly serve as a model for a successful aquaculture industry worldwide.”

Mr. Fahey added that Irish aquaculture was well served by the various state agencies and his own Department working assiduously on its behalf.

A total of eleven commercial projects, comprising three marine land-based finfish, six shellfish and two marine finfish projects in counties Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Leitrim, were recipients of combined EU (FIFG funds) and Exchequer investment support totalling €1,096,629.

The Minister concluded, “With an integrated package of financial, technical, environmental and quality supports available to it under the NDP, I have no doubt but that Irish Aquaculture will continue to develop swiftly towards world class levels of product quality and food safety.  Ireland deservedly has a clean and green image and reputation which the aquaculture industry here is determined to see maintained and enhanced.”

A detailed schedule of the awards is appended.
