Minister Lenihan invites applications for Onshore Petroleum Licensing Options over the Northwest Carboniferous Basin and Clare Basin

Mr. Conor Lenihan T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources is pleased to invite applications for Onshore Licensing Options over the Northwest Carboniferous Basin and the Clare Basin.

Minister Lenihan said “Over recent months there has been renewed interest in targeting the natural gas resource potential of the two basins, which had been identified in earlier exploration. Finding and producing our indigenous natural gas resources is critical to enhancing Ireland’s security of energy supply and reducing our reliance on imported fuels”.

The acreage on offer covers an area of approximately 8,000 square kilometres over parts of counties Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon and Sligo in the North West Carboniferous Basin and parts of counties Clare, Cork, Limerick and Kerry in the Clare Basin. This presents an exciting opportunity for the petroleum industry to invest in exploration onshore Ireland.

Applications for Licensing Options may be submitted up to 12 noon on Friday 11th June 2010.
