Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is responsible for the management of the 70,000 km of rivers and streams and 144,480 hectares of lakes across the country.
On 1 July 2010, IFI replaced the former Central and Regional Fisheries Boards, the Fisheries Co-operative Societies and the National Salmon Commission. This represented a significant change in how the national fisheries resource is managed, recognising the complex interplay of habitats and species, and ecological biodiversity and the further changes that are expected.
The establishment of IFI allows a more streamlined, coherent and integrated approach to the management of the inland fisheries resource. It facilitates an improved national perspective in the formulation of inland fisheries policy and enhances the State’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to challenges.
Alignment of the regional operations of IFI with the river basin districts aids enhanced delivery of the relevant functions under the EC Water Framework Directive and is beneficial in terms of implementing future EC sponsored measures in this area. Click www.fisheriesireland.ie
