While the Minister and the Department has responsibility for policy formulation it is implemented on the ground by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI). IFI was established on July 1, 2010 following the amalgamation of the former Central Fisheries Board and the Regional Fisheries Boards into a single agency. Inland Fisheries Ireland is responsible for the conservation, protection, management, marketing, development and improvement of the inland fisheries resource including sea angling in Ireland.
The Loughs Agency (LA) operates under the co-sponsorship of the Department. It was established under the British Irish Agreement Act 1999 as a North South body to provide effective conservation, management, promotion and development of the fisheries and marine resources of the Foyle and Carlingford Areas. It is also responsible for the development and licensing of aquaculture as well as the development of marine tourism.
