Counties and Towns Currently Connected to the Natural Gas Network and Proposed New Extensions.

To date extensions to the natural gas network have been funded by Bord Gáis Éireann (BGE). No funding, or part funding, has been provided by the Department/ Exchequer. BGE invests from within its own resources, or through borrowings.  Section 8 of the Gas Act 1976, as amended, states that ‘The Board shall in relation to customers other than persons of the type mentioned in paragraphs (a), (b), (c) or (d) of Section 10A of the Gas Act, 1976  ( ie holder of natural gas licence, holder of a petroleum lease, a person including BGE who has been granted an order under the Gas Amendment Act, 1987 to carry out functions conferred on the person by the order, operator of gas-fired generating station or  a consumer who used not less than 2,000,000 standard cubic metres per annum)  develop and maintain a system for the supply of natural gas to such customers, being a system which is both economical and efficient, and which appears to the Board to be requisite for the time being’. Consequently, any proposed extensions to the network must meet BGE’s strict economic criteria.

Since the enactment of the Gas (Interim) (Regulation) Act on 30th April 2002, extensions to the network, including both transmission and distribution to new towns, must also be approved by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER).  The CER has the option of awarding the distribution franchise to BGE or of holding a competition for the right to the franchise.  Similarly the gas supply rights are also subject to competition as markets open progressively.
