Bord Gais Eireann Timeline

  • 1976 Bord Gáis Éireann established under the Gas Act 1976.
  • 1978 First gas consignment brought ashore.
  • 1983 Cork-Dublin Pipeline completed.
  • 1986 Natural gas arrives in Limerick.
  • 1993 Bord Gáis completes construction of Interconnector 1- sub-sea pipeline between Loughshinny, North County Dublin to Moffat in South West Scotland.
  • 1999 Gas 2025 – Future Needs study published, highlighting the need for significant additional infrastructure to meet escalating demand for natural gas.
  • 2000 Public Consultation and routing and design commences on the Pipeline to the West and Mayo-Galway pipeline projects. BGE (UK) invests a further IR£80 million to increase the capacity of Interconnector 1.
  • 2001 Government approval for Second Interconnector (IC2) with Scotland.
  • 2002 Progression of key projects (total investment of almost €1.3billion) continues. Construction of Pipeline to the West and IC2 commenced. Gas conveyance licence secured in Northern Ireland for the construction of two major pipelines.
  • 2004 The 115km North-West pipeline from Belfast to Derry was commissioned on schedule in October 2004.
  • 2005 Construction of the Mayo-Galway pipeline, constructed on behalf of the Corrib partners commenced. Firmus Energy a subsidiary of Bord Gais operating in Northern Ireland was established and licenced to supply gas to ten towns in Northern Ireland. Firmus Energy connected its first industrial customer to the new gas network in the North West in December 2005.
  • 2006 The construction of the 155km South-North pipeline commenced in February 2006 and was completed as scheduled in October 2006. The Mayo-Galway pipeline was mechanically completed as scheduled in October 2006 also.
  • 2007 In August 2007 Bord Gáis announced that it has appointed a GE/GAMA consortium to provide the key equipment and to build its new power plant at Whitegate in Cork with construction scheduled to start in October 2007.
