Bord Gáis Éireann (Bord Gáis) was established in 1976 and is a commercial State body operating in the energy industry. The company is wholly owned by the Government of Ireland. Bord Gáis has two main businesses – Networks and Energy Supply.
Bord Gáis owns and operates the gas transmission and distribution systems in Ireland. The gas distribution network comprises 9,765km of pipelines and the 2,169km transmission network includes two sub-sea interconnectors to Scotland, a spur line to the Isle of Man and two pipelines in Northern Ireland.
Bord Gáis is also an energy supplier, operating in competition with other gas suppliers for the power generation, industrial and commercial gas markets. The company supplies most of the residential gas market in Ireland, which was opened to competition in July 2007. The company entered the retail electricity market in 2001 and has a growing share of that market both in the Republic and in Northern Ireland. In total, it has over 575,000 natural gas customers and held 37% of the total gas sales market and 8% of the electricity supply market in Ireland in 2006.
Bord Gáis employs 771 staff and is headquartered at Gasworks Road, Cork.
While part of a vertically integrated chain, Networks and Energy Supply Businesses are very different businesses.
Networks is primarily infrastructure based and provides services to gas shippers and larger users in the transportation of gas, while Energy Supply is essentially a service focused gas and electricity retail operation where costs of energy procurement and cost to serve its customers are the essential drivers of profitability.
Networks
Networks includes the regulated and commercial gas pipelines in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland: the transmission and distribution gas networks in the Republic of Ireland; the two sub-sea interconnectors between Ireland and Scotland; the on-shore Scotland system; the spur pipeline to the Isle of Man and the transmission pipelines in Northern Ireland.
Energy Supply
Bord Gáis Energy Supply is the retail arm of the group competing in the eligible gas and electricity markets. The full opening of the gas market took place on 1st July 2007, and remains the main challenge facing the Energy Supply business. Actions being taken to maintain competitiveness include outsourcing transactions to gain scale efficiencies. Enhancements to customer service processes are also in progress to improve both existing customer retention and new customer acquisition levels.
Bord Gáis Energy Supply entered the Irish Electricity Supply Market in July 2001 and it currently supplies electricity to over 8,000 sites.
Energy Supply believes that it can play a pivotal role in delivering competitive energy to Irish Industry and is committed to working with customers to ensure that the services provided fit in with their specific needs.
