The role of the Gas (Corporate) Division within the Department, in respect of Bord Gáis Éireann (BGÉ), involves representing the interests of the shareholder (i.e. the Government), where relevant, by: -
- Establishment of BGÉ/Governing Legislation,
- Administration of the Gas Acts 1976-2002,
- Drafting of regulations on matters prescribed in the Gas Acts,
- Shareholder consideration of proposals by BGÉ for construction of gas transmission pipelines,
- Monitoring and overseeing the operations of BGÉ, including its financial and corporate affairs,
- Considerations of proposals for BGÉ to enter into joint ventures or to establish or acquire subsidiary companies,
- Administering the appointment of Chairpersons and members of the Board of the company,
- Corporate Governance issues (including financial issues, staff matters, pay and pensions, subsidiaries)
The Gas (Corporate) Division contribute also toward strategic areas, which include aspects of the National Development Plan and the Department's Strategy Statement. General day-to-day activities for the Division include BGÉ corporate responsibilities (monitoring the current investment programme to ensure key projects meet completion schedules within budget), BGÉ's diversification proposals (such as telecommunications and electricity ventures, plus other joint ventures), co-ordinated responses to relevant EU and National queries, representations, brief and speech material for the Minister, gas safety and BGÉ customer queries and complaints.
