Ecodesign of Energy Related Products Directive

(Directive 2009/125/EC)

The Ecodesign Directive establishes a legal framework for the setting of eco-design requirements for energy related products. It aims to improve the environmental performance of products throughout the life-cycle (raw material selection and use; manufacturing; packaging, transport and distribution; installation and maintenance; use; and end-of-life), by systematic integration of environmental aspects at a very early stage in the product design.

Under the Ecodesign Directive, the EU Commission adopts implementing measures (binding EU Regulations) for various classes of energy related technologies, specifying minimum energy efficiency standards and other eco criteria to be complied with by manufacturers of products in order for those products to be allowed on the EU internal market.

The Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment is responsible for policy and legislation on the Ecodesign Directive, while the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources is responsible for market surveillance and enforcement issues. This latter function includes testing of products for compliance with the relevant implementing measures.

The Ecodesign Implementing Measures adopted to date and further information on this Directive are available on the website of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment at Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment
