Minister Ryan answers question on future of Internet at OECD Ministerial Meeting

Thank you very much for your question, it’s a good one. I remember I was at a climate change conference in Nairobi two years ago and the Japanese ambassador spoke and he made the point that to tackle climate change we have to take energy efficiency as a first priority. He used the metaphor that we had to take a dry towel and squeeze it to get a drop of water out of it. That’s the lengths we have to go to in energy efficiency. I think the Internet can help us do that, I think, as you say, it can help us by cutting back on unnecessary travels – we can meet over the internet, rather than having to drive, we can use smart devices in our home so that our use of electricity is brought right down. I think it can develop our economy towards a digital economy rather than a fossil fuel economy so that we can also cut back our emissions. So the internet is going to be centre stage as we start to tackle climate change and we are going to start doing that now. Thank you.
