Knowledge Society

The role of the Knowledge Society Division is to...

contribute to sustainable economic growth, to promote greater Digital Inclusion which will further increase our potential for competitiveness, digital enterprise and innovation; to ensure that Ireland is well placed to avail of the opportunities afforded by the development of the electronic communications sector; and to contribute to the development of strategies to ensure that Ireland becomes a leading knowledge society.

In brief, the current key focus areas of work for the Division are:

1. To promote increased digital engagement for the benefit of Irish citizens, to enhance economic and social inclusion, regional development and competitiveness in the context of a modern progressive knowledge society, and to participate in international policy interactions for the development of the knowledge society.

2. To promote innovation and growth in the digital media sector in Ireland by:

- working with the Digital Hub Development Agency (DHDA) in the discharge of their functions under the Digital Hub Development Agency Act 2003, in the development of digital media enterprises, along with complimentary community development initiatives; and


- supporting the National Digital Research Centre (NDRC) in commercialising research (translating late research ideas to commercial potential) in a collaborative approach with the third level institutions and the business sector.
