Cognitive Radio Systems
Cognitive technologies is the terminology used to describe equipment which can determine itself which frequency to use. Cognitive radio technologies are seen as an enabler providing more efficient use of spectrum and providing more dynamic access to spectrum. It is hoped that these technologies will be able to make use of unused spectrum and thus ensure that the maximum use can be made of spectrum in all areas. Cognitive radios have the ability to use spectrum which is already used by other spectrum users, i.e. they can share spectrum with other users and for instance use the white spaces not used for TV transmission in an area in the 470 - 790 MHz frequency band by Cognitive Radio Systems.
Research by the CTVR is taking place in Ireland on Cognitive Radio Systems and technologies.
