Preparing for a digital dividend

Steps taken towards the Digital Dividend

In order to see a benefit from the Digital Dividend that is optimum for Ireland,  the spectrum required for television broadcasting in the UHF band was identified by ComReg and a potential use for the spectrum that will be released was identified (ComReg 10/59). The Digital Dividend concerns the use of the band 470 to 862 MHz in the digital only era, post analogue switch-off. DTT will launch carrying Public Service Broadcasting services which are funded by the television licence fee and also some programme services from TV3.

The Department has been kept informed on the network roll out process by RTE. ComReg are responsible for issuing Wireless Telegraphy licences and are also responsible for international negotiations with neighbouring countries regarding the detail of spectrum use in Ireland.
